An Evening of Literature

I had the pleasure of speaking alongside Margaret Atwood at this year’s annual L3 Writers’ Conference in Barrie. What was a science nerd doing at a climate change focused Writers’ conference? Check out the (long and filmed-on-a-not-so-great-video-camera-by-my-parents-from-the-audience) video below!

International Women’s Day

Happy International Women’s Day, everyone!

I am so honoured to have had the chance to speak live nation-wide with Hannah Thibedeau on CBC News about women in STEM in celebration of International Women’s Day. ‪#‎IWD is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women around the world and to encourage others to go further.

We Move Beyond

This article says I “rocked modern science,” which is funny because there never was a rock concert. That would have been much more fun. It went more like this: after a long day of work in the basement, I feel asleep during an experiment and woke up to find that something interesting had happened.

Thanks to Noel and the Beyond team! It was a pleasure chatting with you.

Game Changers

I had a wonderful time chatting with my fellow Top 20 Under 20 alum Shane Feldman two nights ago for an interview in his new “Game Changers” series – a fantastic initiative to engage teachers in the world of student leadership! I am very excited to see the final project. Here’s a picture from the interview:

STEM Awareness Campaign

Mediaplanet Canada has put out a new STEM awareness campaign that’s pretty interesting. I think the piece on embracing failure is particularly relevant. We often only hear about achievements in science, but getting to that achievement often takes many failures. Plus, there are articles by Bill Nye, Col. Chris Hadfield, and lots of other cool people!

Also exciting: my fellow Top 20 Under 20 Kelcie and Jared and I were interviewed for a Panel of Young Innovators. Check it out!

A Special Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving, folks!

I spent my day hosting Johny Pitts, an amazing BBC Presenter and author, who flew in from England to ask me some insightful (read: hard!) questions for his upcoming book on youth empowerment. He says it will be coming out in October 2015. I’ll be sure to share when it does!

Another interesting note: he also co-edits a fascinating website called Afropean (http://afropean.com/). The site has won an ENAR Foundation award for contributing to a racism-free Europe!

A Ray of Sunshine

A ray of sunshine in the dark vortex of terror that is exams – I’m the 2014 Barrie Business Plan Competition winner for my telemedicine non-profit!! I’m glad that the plaque is back at Barrie North Collegiate!

Canada-Wide Science Fair 2014

I am absolutely honoured to have received the Grand Platinum Award at this year’s Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF) – Expo-sciences pancandienne (ESPC) in addition to the Discovery Challenge, Gold Medal, and Actuarial Foundation of Canada Award! All that hard work has paid off! :)

It was such a pleasure to make so many new brilliant friends from all across Canada and reunite with old ones. Thank you so much to my family and friends for the incredible support!

Of course, I really owe this all to Ms. Began, my amazing math teacher, who gifted me her calculus textbook way back at the beginning of grade 9.
